It might sound elementary, but the first step in fixing a sprinkler system is to figure out what’s wrong. For instance, if a sprinkler head leaks all the time it’s not a problem with the sprinkler head, it’s a problem with the valve, just like a dripping shower head is due to a faulty valve. It doesn’t shut off completely and water seeps out of the lowest sprinkler.

   Another example is a system that doesn’t cover adequately. This could be caused by low water pressure (especially if the neighborhood has built up a lot since the sprinklers were installed), a problem with the valve, a poorly designed system, problems with the sprinkler heads wearing out (faulty seals) or a leak (which you may never detect depending upon soil conditions and tree roots). You could also be getting good coverage, but have the timer programmed incorrectly.

   The same principles apply to a sprinkler system that won’t turn

on at all. This could be caused by many different factors. So the first step in repairing a sprinkler system is to understand how sprinkler systems work. Experience is the best teacher. The various components of a sprinkler system can interact in a lot of different ways to produce a lot of different problems. You have to look at the symptoms, figure out what is causing them, then fix the problem. A sprinkler system is after all a system, everything interacts. And for it to function correctly, all of its parts have to function correctly.
